Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Issue
Has anyone had this problem?
My wife's computer has Windows Home Premium 7, SP1 installed. Last week she told me that when she tries to open a document in Office 2010 Home and Student, by clicking the file tab and "open", nothing happens. In other workds the document library pop up does not open so she can select a document. I checked and this was true in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I tried an number of things including repairing the Office installation and finaly uninstalling and re-installing Office 2010. Finally I decided to to a repair install of Windows 7. As I was preparing to do that, I learned that if you have updated Win7 with SP1, you can't do a repair install with a non-SP1 or a slip streamed SP1 disk. I bought Win7 in December 2010 and so it is non-SP1. I went into control panel and uninstalled the SP1 update. Then I cleaned up my disk space using disk cleanup and removed all unnecessary files including system files. After all this was done I checked on my issue and lo and behold..problem solved, Word, Excel, and Project were all behaving as normal. When you click the file tab, then click "open" a pop-up box with the document library opens so you can select what you are looking for. Hooray! Next I restarted the computer and reinstalled SP1 and guess what, the problem returned. So there is some issue with this computer and SP1. I don't know what it is, but I am uninstalling SP1 again. Anyone have any ideas? |

You really should keep Windows 7's service pack installed.
Did you install any other programs recently? Is office 2010 running SP1 and has it been checked for the latest updates? (If it has SP1 installed, it will say it under File > Help) Did you get the pop-up prompt after opening office--if so, you should select "recommended":

Yes, office is running SP1 and looks to be up to date. When I did the uninstall/reinstall I looked for and loaded all updates.
I haven't installed any other programs recently, nor has my wife. I have another computer in the house that I installed Windows 7 and Office at exactly the same time as I installed them on this computere. I used the 3-license packs for both programs. That computer is running SP1 for both the OS and Office and everything works fine. Not sure what pop-up prompt in Office you were referring to, but when I did the re-istall, I did use alll "recommended" settings. |

Looks like Windows loosing a file associations with Office after W7 SP1 reinstall...
Did you try Change which programs Windows uses by default? If that fails, try How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 |

Update: I managed to fix the problem while following arc98disc's suggestions. When I brought up msconfig.exe to set up a clean boot process, I discovered that "Selective Startup" was already selected. I don't know why it was set like that. Neverthless, I reset the selection to Normal Startup and rebooted the machine. Then I reinstalled SP1 and tested in Word. Operation was normal. So I reinstalled all of the other Windows updates that als needed to be installed since I removed SP1. I installed them 1 at a time and tested my issue after each update. All updates are in, all Office file operations are normal.
So I guess the fact that the computer was set on Selective Startup was disrupting Office's ability to access the file locations. Anyway, thanks for the responses and thank you arc98disc for putting me in position to stumble on to a solution!

![]() My guess, it would be a fault in the Windows registry... I use same OS but Office 2003. MS already beat it to death with patches, updates and upgrades so that Office would work fine. I got to SP3 for the Office. Hopefully, MS would release those updates for yours in the future.
