How to Set Default Drive for Downloads
I have the OS installed on an SSD (C drive) with an SATA drive (E) for storage. When I want to download and install a program, W7 doesn't have the Save Inbox pop up like XP does and it automatically installs on my SSD.

How do I set it up for downloads to install on the SATA (E) drive?

Unfortunately, these instructions don't seem to work with W7 32 bit. In fact, after making the registry change, a number of programs (Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and others ) no longer worked. I had to go back and
change the registery setting back to the C drive and then manually change the drive locations for these programs.

Any other suggestions on how to set it so that all downloads are installed on the secondary (E) drive and not filling up my SSD (C) drive?

Try right cliking on the download link, and choosing 'save as'

this is a simple fix... the programs that Dont work after the registry change you just right click either the .exe or the shortcut and select properties...

on the patch change it to the drive letter same as the registry path...

Do all MS updates automatically install on the C drive? Perhaps that's where I getting confused. Other download sites give me the option of where to save.

Updates go wherever Windows is installed. That is why we always recommend at least a 120gb SSD for OS and apps . Windows will use roughly 20GB and that number grows with updates. Plus you will not start out with 120 either, you will have about 111 gb usable.
