I had to have W8 Pro installed by a repair shop because when I installed it destroyed my computer. Any way, I have 5 external drives connected to my computer (please don't say anything about the number of drives) and I also have a Zip 750. All are powered up and connected to USB ports and/or hubs. The trouble is Windows does not recognize any of these. I have checked, double checked and triple checked all of the connections and they are all good. I have even moved the USB cables around to different ports to no avail.
Can anyone advise me as to what to do to get Windows to see these drives?

Go into Device manager and see if there is a listing "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
If not, you need to load the chipset drivers for your motherboard. What is the make and model of your computer? Is it a brand name machine or a custom built?

I have more USB controllers than I care to think about. I have been trying to install each HDD by itself and so far I have been pretty successful.
The problem I am having now is that I have no audio. Dell installed a new M.B., CPU and RAM with no success. I even installed a PCIe sound card and it wouldn't work either. I have been through everything in the Control Panel. My sound is listed as installed and working but nothing comes out of the speakers I have tested the speakers and they are working very well. I have the feeling that there is something in W8 that I don't know about that needs to be set.

Look in Device Manager to see exactly how your sound devices are listed. If all you see is "High Definition Audio Device" - then you are using generic drivers, not drivers specific to the device in your system. If you see several sets of likely incompatible devices (two sound output devices can't be active at the same time), you might need to disable the onboard sound in order to use the PCIe card you added.
If Windows 8 sound drivers are available at either the Dell website or the sound card manufacturer's website, try those. If not, try Windows 7 versions of the drivers that match the bit depth of your Windows 8 (32-bit or 64-bit). Best of luck . . . Gary |
