I've read only one article (PC World.. I think) on Vista's speed, and it was 3 - 25% slower than compared to XP rigs.

be ready with your drivers
I haven't tried running my games on Vista yet. Some say that they didn't encounter any problem when they tried to play their games on the new OS, while some say that their favorite games refused to run or load. Just in case you encounter any problem with Vista when trying to run your games on it, try to install the proper driver. You can download Vista drivers at http://www.radarsync.com/vista.

UAC (User Account Controls) have been a problem with games, otherwise no.
Also, death to Starforce.

So far, all I've really checked out is Dark Messiah for a short bit. Ran smoothly, looked great (just as before). I look forward to having more time to test my other games.
Mind you, this is with an 8800 using the 100.59 beta drivers. |

Someone I played with had major problems with gaming on vista due to drivers (7800GT I believe). I don't know if this was lack of Vista support or video card support.

I installed Halo on Vista and think I was directed to XBox servers when I tried multiplayer mode. Everything worked except for the sound which was audible but somewhat garbled.
I think Vista does audio different and don't think XP games will have good audio without some kind of patch. |

So far everyone I in my clan for Call of Duty 2 has had trouble with Vitsta, wether it was retail or BETA. Microphone doesn't work, game will not install properly, and after it does you have to run it as an administrator. One guy got everything to work, but it took him a number of days.
All of their hardware was listed as compatible. Found out later it wasn't as compatible as it was suppossed to have been. Games for Windows does not seem to be off to a good start.

Creative has a work around, if you have one of their sound cards, otherwise most of what you knew as DX sound, like EAC, no longer functions in Vista.

You people who are having issues are simply suffering through what early adopters of every previous M$ operating system did. You just have to be patient and wait for fixes and new drivers. XP was miserable when it first came out and people who upgraded from 98SE had a rude awakening - and now look at it - it's probably the most stable and best supported OS ever.

I was thinking about purchasing Vista just to see what it is like (dual boot a system at home) and if I didn't like it i'd just never use it again. But from what some of my friends tell me, is that Vista is pretty cool, but I still beg to differ about GLC's comment

Looks like a valid statement to me. Even Win 98 wasn't a smooth roll out with it's own share of driver issues and the like. I was one of the first to get 98 (the day it was released) but I stayed away from XP on my own machines for a long time due to all the problems / issues that were reported.

I have a dual boot with seperate hard drives for XP and Vista. This allows me to use all my programs and games until I can get everything I want on Vista. |

I am a pc gamer so I'm quite disconcerted about all that's going on gaming wise with Vista. What's worse is that I invested not too long ago in a $300 or so video card (Evga 7800 GS 256MB Ram), and from what I see it's useless in Vista. This was just before the revelation of Direct X 10. So now I'm stuck having to upgrade again! I can't even run Halo smoothly, which is at this point an older game. My sound card, which is an Audigy 4, runs, but I can tell that it is not fully functional.
GLC is right though, patience pays so I hope we will be showered with awesome drivers soon! And I'm willing to tought it out. I still think Vista is going to shape up to being great. |

Wow... Can't run Halo with a 7800 in Vista!?!? That's terrible. Heck, it ran great with my old 9800 in XP. Hopefully some new drivers will do the trick for you.

I've heard news that Vista will be like ME, and phased out or passed over within a year or so, and the REAL OS will be released early next year.
Someone was trying to tell me that M$ has made so many flaws and mistakes with this new OS, that the only way to do it right is to start over and make a new system. Service Packs and updates will not be enough to make this think as smooth as XP is now. Of course this could just people making up stuff so they can hear their own voice, but I did hear it from quite a few different sources. But if you take a look at Service Pack 2 for XP, it's almost as big as the OS itself. Real large file, LOTS of data. I don't remember XP being like this, I waited until the first SP was allready out, but I DO remember ME. WOW was it terrible. |

FWIW, have now played Neverwinter Nights 2 and Supreme Commander Demo. SC Demo works great. NWN2 has had a couple of screen freezes (probably due to the NVIDIA driver issues), but otherwise has run great.
Still haven't taken the time to run Oblivion yet. |

Nvidia just released a new driver version 100.x for Vista. I will try it out and post my findings. Let's hope.
