How to dual boot 2 drives: Add Win2000 to existing WinME PC
Hi, I am needing some advice on installing Win2000 on a Western Digital slave hard drive (1 partition.) The IBM Deskstar master has WinME (2 partitions.)
My motherboard (PII Abit) does not support the Western Digital (15 gig) as a master so my existing IBM (40 gig) is the master. It also does not support WinXP. I have been reading throught the XP forums and learned some intersting things like about using cable select to solve some problems although I am not sure if that applies in my situation. Since I can't backup my 40 gig to a 15 gig, I am trying to retain the IBM as the master. I want Win2000 on the smaller HD because WinME has become corrupted in some way (can't get connected to the internet) and no amount of scandisking, chkdsk'ing, reinstalling or troubleshooting by my ISP has solved this. I simply want the second hard drive for the purpose of dialing up to the internet and for backing up My Documents/Registry/Sys Files/Favorites, etc. I am an underemployed tech worker so I don't have the money to spend right now on buying new stuff like a motherboard/processor. This is the issue. When I try to install Win2000 to my master C:, it won't boot and I have to sys c: with the WinME files to correct the problem. The same thing happens when I try to install Win2k to the slave E:. Somehow Win2k is targetting my boot files on C: even though I am installing it to E: I have tried this with the setup files located on both C: and E: Does anyone see anything that I am doing glaringly wrong? I have 40-pin cables with the standard master/slave jumper settings. Thanks! |

All you should have to do is boot with the 2K CD and install 2K on the WD. This will set up the builtin Win2K dual boot menu. If this doesn't work for some reason, you have core issues with ME or your hardware that will require fixing.
