Can sumone refer me to article(s)/knowledge base etc dealing with the following:
(l) How to do 'clean install' of win9x onto a blank (ie fdisked-formatted but empty) hdd via external cdrom..i need to accomplish this with a noitebook lacking an internal cdrom..using an external cdrom thru the pcmcia slot! (2) How to (ie specific dos syntax instructions) to load win9x to hardrive for subsequent installing (I dont want to have win9x continually prompting me for the cdrom everyitme i install a device/piece of software!) many tx. |

Boot to dos with cdrom support via the drivers for the external. Make a directory on the harddrive called C:\win98. Change to the external cdrom with the copy of windows in it. Issue this command "copy d:\win98\*.* {space}c:\win98". (assuming that d is the drive letter of your cdrom). This will copy all the files that you need to install windows. Change to the c: drive and then cd\win98. Issue the command "setup" and follow the prompts. Do this as number 1 and you will not have to do anything for number 2.

I would think that you would have to have the pcmcia drivers that came with the cdrom to enable it. You might also have to have dos drivers for the PCMCIA slots themselves.
Dos does not have to be installed on the computer, just on the floppy you boot from. [Edited by Carl Price on 04-09-2001 at 09:38 AM] |

Yes, you will need DOS PCMCIA drivers in addition to the DOS CD drivers. They can all be loaded on a boot floppy, but will suck up a huge chunk of conventional memory. With this in mind, make sure himem.sys is on the boot floppy, and you have DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS and DOS=HIGH in the boot floppy's config.sys. You may also need emm386.exe, and DEVICE=EMM386.EXE NOEMS and DOS=HIGH,UMB in the config.sys. This will allow you to use DEVICEHIGH for the PCMCIA and CD drivers in config.sys and LOADHIGH in autoexec.bat for the mscdex. If you do this, do not attempt to install Windows with emm386 loaded - copy the cabs and sys the hard drive and reboot to it before doing the install.
