hey how can you enable cleartype? I heard the visual is so much better and stuff so i want to activate it. I googled it and they all said you go properties>appearance>effects but the effects button doesn't do anything. Any help would be gr8!

That's how you do it: Right-click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance tab, then the Effects button. Keep in mind that ClearType only works on LCD monitors.

ClearType doesn't work with LCD monitors only, it works with CRTs as well. It's not monitor dependent, it's just a technique to anti-alias the font.

Be sure you've selected "ClearType", not standard.

But about the "visual is so much better" . . . it does nothing else than blur the font. . some happen to like it, some do not. It's personal preference really. For me, ClearType makes the font look worse.

Well, that's true to a certain extent, but the method of anti-aliasing only works 100% like it is supposed to on LCD monitors, where you can address individual subpixels. You can't do this on CRT monitors, so it works, although not as well as on an LCD monitor.

A very good explanation is at http://www.grc.com/cleartype.htm

You won't notice much difference between "Standard" and "ClearType" methods of smoothing fonts on a CRT monitor, but you will notice a big difference on an LCD.

I like Cleartweak from ioisland.com. The best part is that it's free.

MS says Clear Type words best with LCD monitors. I installed the program and tweaked the type. Left it alone. Went back to change to standard because I did not think this would make a difference. Boy was I wrong! The eye strain as a result was horrible. So I went through the tweaks again and am very happy with it. It is probably not for everyone. By the way, I have a Copaq 15 inch CRT monitor. So it all depends on the end user and their equipment. That is my two cents worth.
