Ok, I know that many people know how to disable the start up programs but I'd thought I'd post how to delete them as well for silly items you know you will never use under Windows XP. For me, I know I will never use the nVidia Raid service for my motherboard, or
Disabling startup programs for the new Mech recruits: - Go to "Start" and click "Run" - Type "msconfig" and hit enter - Click the start up tab under this new window - Delete items you know you don't need. For DELETING startup program entries under the registry and still being able to do "Normal Startup" under MSCONFIG. And always, if you don't feel comfortable performing surgery on the heart of the Windows OS, don't touch the registry and ignore the next section. - Go to "Start" and click "Run" - Type Regedit and hit enter - On the tree on the left side, go under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Run - Under the right panel, you have here the startup programs! - Delete these entries to delete them from your starup list completely and put your mind at ease. This does not delete the programs themselves but deletes them from the start up list under MSCONFIG and completely disables them. Easier to browse there and less clutter if you have a lot under that menu. Enjoy.

I think you missed a step for the regedit.
It should be: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Run

You also need to look in the same place under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key.

An easier way to remove startup items permanently is to use HijackThis.

Is there anyway to add applications to the start up list, say Windows Media Player and have it start playing or something at start up?
