Avoiding W98SE Power Off shutdowns

Recently I had to deal with shutdown lockups on a Win98SE computer due to a NIC problem. The usual Ctrl-Alt Delete etc. that I knew wouldn't work; the only way I could shut down was to power off which is a last resort for me.

Here's a solution I found that worked:
Creat an emergency exit icon on the desktop that is separate from the normal Start menu Shut Down that will shut down Windows when the normal Shut Down won't.

I created a desktop shortcut named EmerXit for C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE user, exitwindows.

This is the short version of other shutdown methods found here....

WINDOWS SHUTDOWN & RESTART CENTER

Using the long version gives a choice of the type of shutdown you want by using different numbers of the n value or a combination of n values.

Microsoft has similar info here...

How to Exit Windows 98/Me Automatically Using a Batch File

Drawbacks of this is you may encounter lockups where there the mouse or monitor isn't available so there are some keyboard shortcuts found here...

Shortcut For Closing Win98SE

This information may be old news to many but I wish I had known about doing this long ago.

Anyone else have other methods to avoid Power Off shutdowns?
