How To ADD Promise ULTRA DMA CONTROLLER

on Win2K or WinXP after the OS already has been installed - this does not include all win9X OS's but can be used also ..

If you already have setup Win2K or WinXP and you like to add any kind of Ultra Dma Controller Card to the current system configuration, then you have to do following steps to assure that you will not run into problems like getting the annoying "Invalid_Boot_Device" BSOD on the boot as soon you connect the hard drive to it..

Now Windows is writing a bootsector to your hard drive where it actually also in it's registry then sets the type of Controllor you use - so as Window 2K and also WinXP is hardware dependend (Win2K much more than WinXP) it will show you the above error as soon it can't find the controller specified in the registry ..so that's why you need to go be those steps below and make sure that you don't miss anything..

1.Open up your computer and install the Addon Controller card. Do not yet connect any hard drive or other device to it

2.Boot up your computer and then when asked to install the drivers install them and reboot - WinXP will configure this on the first attempt without any user input for the most addon cards and Win2K you may need to have the driver disk ready for it..

3.Restart to Windows and check in Device manager hardware that the Drivers have been installed proper..

4.Shut down and now move the drive CABLE which connects Win2k or WinXP Drive to the Primary IDE controller port of the ADDON controller -

5.Startup again and enter bios and set the bootsequence to SCSI , C, A or alike..

6.Safe and exit the bios and restart - your Windows should now start up without any problems and then after you have succesfully boot into Win2K or WinXP you can shutdown again and connect the other devices as you like in on the rest of the controller port.

NOTE
Before you only start to do this make sure you are backing up your Configuration in Control Panel > System Applet > Hardware Configuration so if you made a mistake or if for unknown reason your computer doesn't start you just unplug the hard drive from the ADDON controller move it back to the onboard controller and then use the backed up configuration to restore your Original windows settings..

Hope this will help the one or other here for a failure less install.
Thanks for Reading
Hpro..
