I am new at this, so please forgive the ignorance...
The instructions for SHOP VAC say to restart in DOS mode and run ShopVac. Well, I know nothing about DOS. I have the ShopVac BAT file on my desktop. How do I "run it" in DOS. What command do I have to type, etc... Told you I was new.... |

Move it to C:\. Reboot to DOS mode. If you are at the C:\ promt in DOS, just type in the name of the .BAT file. For example, if you named it SHOPVAC.BAT, just type in SHOPVAC and hit enter.
If you are in any other directory other than C:\ when you boot to DOS, type in CD C:\ and hit enter.

some people have experienced problems with the ShopVac procedure....but I have not.
I believe it does create a back up of your registry, so if anything goes wrong, there is a registry you can restore from. |

Yes, it creates a restore and you shouldn't have any problems with it.

Well, I'm sorry, but I have to ask ONE MORE BASIC question. When I restart in MS-DOS, it brings me to a command of: "C:\WINDOWS>". How do I get it to be just "C:\WINDOWS"?
Told you it was basic.... |

Sorry --- I asked the wrong thing---I want to get from "C:\Windows>" to just
"C:\". I need to get the "windows" out of there (don't I?). |

Hope I'm not too late.
Make sure you get shopvac.bat from http://members.cnx.net/reboot/shopvac.htm and not the one here on PCMECH. Something goes screwy with the code when converted to HTML, and Dave has tried to fix it twice with no luck, but the one on my site works just fine. There is also an undo.bat in case it royally messes up. |
