A sight for sore eyes (for ATI owners)

I was at www.rage3d.com the other day and found Refresh Fix. It fixes refresh rate problems with games under Win 2K/XP which tend to run at only 60Hz. I'm happy to say that I now have back in my games, refresh rates of 120Hz at 640x480, 100Hz at 800x600, and 85Hz at 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

Apparently it works for Rage 128/128 Pro's, and Radeons.

Most video cards have a default refresh rate of 60hz in Windows XP/2000...this causes games to run at 60hz...refresh rate fixes will force your monitor/video to use it's max refresh rate with every resolution.

Talking problems with games

Can this lead to problems running games like the display breaking up,jerky videos and the game unresponsive, unstable, not having any control with the mouse, not being able to shut down the program or freezing?

Possibly jerky performance when in higher resolutions...you won't get as many FPS

Most of those other problems are caused by having a POS card

catch23 is, in the way only he can, telling you that your card is a piece of s***. He has been cautioned about this before and is treading on thin ice.

Look back at what I said...did I say his card specifically was a POS...did I say the problems he is having are caused by a POS card

It helps to comprehend what you read.

catch23:

Here at PC Mechanic we try to have respect for other members, no matter who they are. If you feel someone has a lower than par {insert component here} you are expected to state it with respect to that member, instead of simply saying, in general terms, "you have a POS"

It seems to many people here that this is an ongoing problem with you. If you can not show other members the respect that is expected by a PC Mechanic Member, you will be removed. This is your final warning.

As for this thread, I appriciate the link HAL. I have a Radeon 7000 and a Rage Fury Pro 2000. This will make things easier on my eyes

If you're having issues such as freezing, jerky vids, etc, it wouldn't be a problem with the refresh rate. I have an All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500 and it works great. Do you have the latest video drivers? Any resource conflicts?

Talking Hi Hal

I've used four different drivers with the same result.Actually the original driver that came on the cd with the card seems to be the best. The machine is very stable except for a few games. These games have played ok before but not flawlessly.By conflicks I assume you mean IRQs.The troubles got worse after I added a linksys lan card.I was having a hard time with the on board lan so I tried the linksys with no better luck.I'll check out the IRQs.I belive the modem is on the same IRQ as the video card. I'll get back with IRQ info. Thanks for your help Hal.

Talking yep

Video card and madem are on IRQ 11 and USB cotroller and SB Live sound card are on 5.I was going to pull the Linksys anyway so I can try that but I suspect it may have something to do with memory.I have two 256mb sticks ddr2100ram but they are different brands, one Samsung, one Micron.Think it might be a problem?Like I said earlier the system is very stable other than some games.I could also try pulling one stick of ram or try changing slots, that would be easy to do.The board is a Soyo with the VIA266A chipset.I have 3 computers and about 50 different games but I don't think I have one game that works on all three. Is that par for the course or should they all run?Can you suggest anything else.Memory settings are on optimal default in BIOS.Thanks

If the modem and VC are sharing an IRQ, this can cause big hassles unless you are running 2K or XP with ACPI. Move the modem to another PCI slot or remove it if you aren't using it and see what happens.

If it's in the first slot right next to the video card, yes, move it.

Talking Hi GLC

It's not next to the AGP.it's in the fourth PCI slot.Well I took out the Linksys card and disabled the usb ports in the Bios scince I'm not using them right now anyway.I have no IRQ conflicks now but the modem went to IRQ 5 from being on 11with the videeo card and the SB live went to IRQ10 from 5.I've heard from some on these forums that the sound card should be on 5 but everything is working fine.So far I"ve been playing the game I had the most problems with for two hours with no trouble so it looks good.It wouldn't run for five minutes before.I'll be trying the others over the next day or so but lif you have any more suggestions please post them. Thanks GLC.You guys will make a geek out of me yet.
