Can I cut a ide cable shorter?

Hey HAL!
Can I cut a ide cable to about 7 inches from the mobo(blue) connector, and disassemble the master conector and reassemble it on the cut end?
Will this work? I have about 7 inches to go from the mobo to the drive and here I have to smoosh 18 inches of ide cable wherever itll go. The drive is the only thing on the cable. I wonder if there would be a performance increase due to latency and signal loss being lessened.
Thanx in advance!

Chris

You could, but I would just fold up the excess neatly and cable tie it, far less work.

well i shortened one in philosophy class today and im rather weary on trying it out on my only up and running system cause its kinda hard to realign all those leads.

if it works on a plextor dvd drive, does that mean it will work on a hard drive? or does the dvd drive not use all the cables the hard drive does?

I decided to risk it and have had good results so far at about 5 inches of cable. The cable pretty well aligns itself but you never know if the pins got bent when you took it apart or re assembled it.
I really feel that it has made a positive effect on drive access and transfers.

Hey! *** is this??!!?

Upon examining an IDE cable that I pulled from service I noticed that there is a perfectly made punch where there is a section missing of one wire about 4mm long in only that one wire. The cut is about a centimeter from the mobo connector and with the connector key faceing down, it is approximately the 14th wire. The cut is perfect only exciseing one wire. This is an 80 wire jobbie of indeterminate brand, but theres a word, "ACTUONE", printed with all the rateing bs. What is the cut for, anyone??!!??

I really feel that it hasn't had an effect on your drive tranfers, except for making your case less cluttered.

Check out this thread where I got really bored and mapped out an 80 wire cable. Not all of the wires are connected to all three connectors. The company that manufactured your cable punched out a wire to have the same effect as not connecting to a pin on the connector.

All 80 wire ATA 100 cables have this punch. It disconnects 1 pin. It is used for cable select. Automatic configuration of drives.
Personally I have never used cable select because when u get a drive it is by default generally the master.

If a person had 2 drives then this would require the reconfiguration of jumpers which is simple enough to do or change the jumpers to use cable select. Personally I have never bothered with cable select.

Not all have that wire punched. Many just don't have a pin connected to the wire as I posted in this thread that I mentioned above.

What about if you put the connector on at a 45 degree angle or so? wouldn't you get problems with the delays? Has this ben done before without any problems with the signal delays?

You couldn't; the connector won't fit like that.

The connector has to be perpendicular to the cable for the teeth to properly attach to all of the wires as it should.

If you did, you'd have some problems with propagation delays.

==============================================================================

I will correct what I said in a previous post. All the ATA 100 cables I HAVE SEEN have had the check in the cable.

hmm, I guess your right that the connectors have to be parallel, but it would look neat to have one attached at a 45 degree angle(baybe useless, but cool).
