fqpissed Loud laptop

About four months ago, the hard-drive on my lap-top was wiped clean and had new software installed on it. After this "reimaging", it ran very quietly- like new. Since then, however, it has gotten considerably louder, and the fan seems to come-on more often now as well. My informed guess that this is the result from wear-and-tear on the hard-drive, since I do use the computer a lot. It is a 600 Mhz machine about 16 months old. Any suggestions on how I can take my laptop back to its former softer state?

Is it the fan or the hard drive that is loud? If it is the fan you can try and find a replacement for it.

If it is the hard drive you could replace the it if it sounds like it is wearing out. Check for bad sectors to see if the hard drive is functioning properly.

Before you jump into relplacing it you could save any info you don't want to lose and wipe the hdd again. Then return it to its "original" state again. If it still is loud replace it.

Thanks for replying- good free advice in tech world is becoming harder to find. As for the noise, it's hard-drive primarily. I just wondered if there
was some simple adjustment or something that could be done to quiet it rather
than replacing anything. (Also, I keep my lap-top relatively stationary, not taking it anywhere often.)

You can try doing standard maintenance - clean out the temp files, the temp internet files, do a scandisk and a defrag.
