recovering lost data in W2k
I had recently installed Norton System works and found that my dsl slowed down quite a bit, so I uninstalled it.
When I rebooted all my data had dissappeared. Settings, files, Quickbooks, its all gone. I run W2k, SP2. Is there a way to recover the data or restart in a period two days ago? Mike |

If you find you must buy a program to recover what you wish to, my suggestion is FixIt Utilities by Ontrack. They have a nice do-it-yourself file recovery program, and FixIt is far better than any Norton stuff....if you ask me. I have never heard anything but anger and bitterness over the use of Norton products, they seem to be vindictive about uninstalls.

It's possible that you just lost your profile - open the Documents and Settings folder and see how many users are in there. There will be at least 3 - Administrator, All Users, and Default User - plus any other users you have added. Normally when a profile corrupts, Windows 2000 will create a new one with that user's name, and rename the corrupt one with a .bak extension. You will have to go into your folder options and tell it to show hidden files and NOT hide file extensions to get a full picture of this structure. If you have a profile with a .bak extension, I would bet that all your missing data is in there, as that is where the My Documents that you see is. If this is what has happened, generally a reinstall from scratch is the best thing to do unless you want to try to recreate the profile, but at least you can back up your files onto CDR or something before you do.

Try this here - it's very sophisticated program and if your files have been deleted then you will probably get them back - try not to defrag or install any programs in the meantime - the program should be installed on a clean drive and not on the drive you like to recover..the program is called Get Data back for NTFS - you can use it as well on Fat32
