your best bet is to have a video card with the two monitor output built in. This way you do not:

fill a pci slot with another card (the second video card)
have the possibility (probability) of conflicts between the drivers for each card
have the problem of finding a PCI card that meets high expectations you might need filled (which at that point you might as well just replace the original for the same or less $)
have another heat source inside your case (the second card)

multi monitor cards are pretty common now so that is not a problem, others here I am sure can help with the choice. What kind of monitors do you have? If you have not yet bought the second monitor this will broaden your card choice cause you can have dvi and sga outputs on the same card more frequently than say 2 dvi or 2 sga
