Just saw this in Win Insider:
Keep Registry Optimized Reader submission: If you write frequent changes to your Registry, Run SCANREG with the /OPT switch. Boot to DOS and at the prompt type SCANREG /OPT. This switch compacts the wasted space in Registry and removes lines that aren't being used. Keeps the Registry clean, which means you're less likely to encounter corruption issues, and Windows may boot sligthly faster. -- Stephen Germany Does this do the same thing as the shop vac for the registry? Has anyone tried this?

Before you run scanreg/opt, run scanreg/backup and scanreg/fix. Shopvac is even better, but it has bitten me a couple of times, so on a Win 98 system, run scanreg/backup before shopvac, and on a 95 system copy system.dat and user.dat to a safe place before running it.
