What To Backup Before Formatting
Here's a checklist if important files that you should backup before formatting a drive, or doing anything in general that would possibly result in losing your data (i.e. upgrading).

Thanks for the list Dr. Z. I can't count the times I forget to backup my email , address book and bookmark settings only to slap myself in the face after I already reformatted.

People who use iCQ must not forget to save thier contacts otherwise they will have to send each contact a request and wait for the permission.

To make backing up easier have a separate HDD or partition to keep all your MP3’s, Pictures, downloaded programs and other important data on. When I have to reformat all I have to back up is my e-mail and favorites the rest is taken care of.

Doctor, you must have been reading my recent tearful posts !
I went through utter grief a couple of years ago but our memory is so short and I learned nothing and was doomed to repeat my mistakes; to paraphrase Santana. There must be some software to deal with this problem. Or someone should write some. DELETE all files except program and operating files and drivers? YES! Delete all visits to shameful sites ? YES ! Delete everything except what was on the computer when I bought it ? YES! I don't think that would be too hard a program to write, and very saleable. Cheers, Chris. |

What you're describing is a format and reinstall
![]() I have a couple of articles on here dealing with backing up Windows 9x, including one on how to completely back up a whole drive to another drive/partition. Check out http://www.pcmech.com/show/optimize/13/ and http://www.pcmech.com/show/optimize/118/ |

When I install programs I like I keep the install program for a bit just to see if I like it and if I do I copy it to a CD. If the program has a license code I copy it to a text file and put it there also. That way I have all my favorites on disk and don't have to hunt to find them again. I am old so I forget easy. I have a separate hard drive that I first format and then put all my folders and backups on it and I also use a program to back up all my drivers so I do not have to go find them it is called WinDriver Expert 1.70 and it is freeware. I then write all my write everything to disk just in case. I have done it enough times over the years I am getting good at backing everything up and doing a clean install.

Azgir,
Here's how to backup for Outlook. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;195719 Also, there's a new backup program called WinBackup that has most of these backup options in it. http://www.liutilities.com/products/...s/screen2b.gif http://www.liutilities.com/products/winbackup/ |
