Bytes Bits--archiving important tips, tricks and links
This is going to be a Closed Thread. Using Sticky Technology to keep it on the front page. I will be maintaining valuable information in this section. Both from information I have picked up over the years and information that I find from other users here on PCMECH. When I quote other users, I will include their name, date of post just as a way of sharing the credit with them. This will be an on going thread; basically I will be posting new replies as a means of updating and adding information.
Special request, correction or anything else you need to let me know about, Please PM me.

Email TIPS
Out Look Express The main thing I don’t' like about Out Look Express is the way it displays a preview of an email when opened. With today’s mass spam and viruses that travel over email having the preview on is like leaving your key in the front door as you leave your home. The problem is that so much email contains active programs that auto run when opened. Guess what, Preview helps that process. Also with the preview option on, you cannot easily delete some of those emails. Because you would be activating the hidden code buried in the emails. Which could also contain a possible virus. So you see all kinds of scary things can happen on your PC with out your knowledge simply by having the preview feature turned on To turn off the preview go to View, then lay out. Then uncheck Show preview pane. Then you can delete emails easy with out opening them if you do not know who the sender is if you choose to.. I know this is an old tip, but I know there are allot of people that could benefit from this one. |

Most Peer to Peer file sharing software uses and requires SPYWARE/ADWARE to be installed on your PC. IF you clean up the SPYWARE/ADWARE on your PC and some programs appear to be broken, You will most likely have to reinstall the program and let it put it's required SPYWARE/ADWARE back in your system to use them. On your reinstall, READ everything and select the bare minium amount of options. Most of the options are extra, optional SPYWARE/ADWARE.
Clean up Ad ware and spy ware on your PC. Ok, I have been testing Ad-aware 5.83 by http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Lavasoft) This is a free ware program File size: 871K License: Free Here is what I run the program on. I have 2 PC's, both win98 SE. PC1 is my main system, I am very careful about what is installed on it. PC2, I will install almost anything, especially If I suspect it may contain spy ware. Anyways, I run it on PC2 first, a system I know was infested with major spy ware. As expected, it found a ton of spy ware and cleaned it. Then I ran it on PC1, and to my surprise, it found about 20 items on this PC as well and cleaned them all, (most of these where cookies I had not cleaned) Then I downloaded and installed the Refupdate 2.01 and updated both PC's. Found more Spy ware on Both PC's. So far, the only side effect I had after selecting every item listed as spy ware, my Kazaa stopped working on PC 2. I had to reinstall to correct. (After reinstalling kazaa, choosing not to install any extra software like save now, and the other promotion options, when I run Ad ware on that PC now I have 4 components listed that I believe come with kazaa. The Files are all TYPE cydoor details cd_clint.dii cd_htm.dii, and 2 reg keys cydoor. By keeping those 4 entries, kazaa does continue to work for me.) I am just including the Kazaa info as FYI, I have not fully tested to see if all 4 of those effect kazaa, and I am just letting you know running ad ware can effect programs in an adverse way sometimes in the process of cleaning up spy ware and ad ware. I most cases, you can probably reinstall the program that was effected and make it run again, however you would be re introducing spy ware and ad ware back into the system. (It is give and take, some programs will require you run their ads to work correctly.) One major plus for me about this software, it did not try to contact the internet at anytime, other then when I run the update. Steps to download and run the program Download Ad-aware 5.83 Final (Full Install) 871 kb RefUpdate 2.01 for Ad-aware 411 kb Both can be found at http://www.lavasoft.de/downloads.html Install Ad-aware 5.83 Then install refupdate 2.01. Then got Start programs Find the Lavasoft Refupdate and update the system. The update was very short; it does contact the Internet for this. Then run the ad-aware program from the short cut on your desktop. It will give you the choice of where to scan. I selected my computer, which then checked all the options. The scan will take a few minutes, it will give you a list of all programs that are currently running then give you a list of all the programs that it believes are Ad ware and spy ware. Easy of use, I think it was very nice, if you can download programs and find them after then install them you should have no problems using this product. (This may be updated at anytime, I would like to add screen shots maybe) Last edited by Byte 2.0; 12-08-2002 at 12:44 PM. |

Networking. This is just a start. I am gathering some of my old posts here so I can work on them later before they get lost. My Plan is to give several examples of different types of networks. I plan to have networks from Peer to Peer, Internet sharing, routers, Wireless and bring in cable and DSL type of connections.
Ok On PC1 Win98 goto the control panel, then double click on network. The Main Items you need are Client for MS networks NIC card listed TCP/IP ---> NIC card then click on TCP/IP then click on properties speicfiy an IP address like 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 then click OK then click on file and printer sharing and put a check mark in file and printers that you want to share. click on identification tab, Name this computer like PC1 then it will ask for a workgroup. both PCs have to be in the same work group. case sensitive OFFICE works good. then click back on configuration tab. then hit ok. It will scan files and then install what it needs then ask to reboot. Then PC 1 is set up. Repeat on PC 2, exceptions, when you assign an IP address the name has to be different, but needs to be in same work group like OFFICE name this one like PC2. make this one 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Win95, Win98, WinME are almost all the same for networking. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ok so you have 4 PCs? all 4 with win 98? Here is the main think, all the PC's have to be in the same work group. default in win98 is WORKGROUP Since all have Internet access I will assume the cables are all correct and not a driver issue. on the Network Neighborhood Right Click go into Identification and make sure each PC has a different name and all are in the same work group, CASE SENSITIVE. on the configuration be sure each have file and printer sharing for MS Networks reboot, make sure each has a shared resource. what I do is pick a folder like My documents on C drive and right click and share it, and I do set passwords. when you do this when you click on Network Neighborhood you should see the work group u picked, double click on it, and you shoudl see each PC name. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

(copy of my post in internet)--Just listing this as an example on a possible connection to the internet if Iexplore dies.
Tonight I took a tech support call from a lady with Win ME, IE 6sp1. She informed me that her Internet Explore would not open. Said it had been like that all day. She clicked on the short cut and got a message, about windows being unable to locate the file. I had her search on her pc coudl not find iexplore.exe. Found some iexplore.dll and related but no .exe. Ran Repair on IE 6 could not complete it was so bad. But I was able to have her surf if I used explore instead of Iexplore. (I had her open the My Computer windows, Max to full screen. Then I had her use the address line to type in URL's) downloaded the IE6 SP1 installer from MicroSoft, could not install it said it installed but it never downloaded the files from MS, it was a mess. The install file as many of you know, it like half a meg and when run should connect to the internet and download the rest of the IE componets. It would not do that. The install program would run and say all componets was already installed, recommended exiting and not reinstall. I had her even try custom and select all the option conponets. It still did not attempt to connect to the net and download. I have a hint as to why maybe, I think the installer needs a working Iexplore to connect to the internet. One reason I supect this, I had my customer surf to PCMECH and click on a link in my thread in tips and Tricks and she coudl not get it. The way pcmech forum works it auto opens a new Iexplore. Her Iexplore being dead did not allow that. The Only idea I had left was to have her download a FULL install of IE6SP1 and advise her to install it. I directed her to a website that I know has the full install and helped her get the download started, like 77meg file http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/suppo...5/msiexpl.html (this is the link I tried to have her click on and it refused to open) At least she was connected on DSL and the download was only going to take her like 20-25 minutes. I just wonder if that was a solution that should have fixed her issue? I advised her to download it, I had her saving it to the desktop and told her to double click it when down. I honestly believe she would have no problem with the simple instructions on how to install it. I had to leave the call at that point. I left good notes to the next tech if she had to call back. |
