Question Speeding up a PC using win 98 SE

I recently upgraded a lot of the hardware in a pc which made it run a lot faster than before. However in recent weeks the computer has began to slow down when I browse folders which I don't use on a day to day basis. I run a defrag every night and a total clean up (just the standard windows system tools) but this still has no effect on the speed of browsing through folders.

Does anybody have any tips or tricks that could help to speed up the system. (Processing is fine as programs install very fast and process data very fast).

Thank you in advance.

Adrian

I dont think running defrag every night is good for your hd btw, i have always learned that hd's wear out a lot faster if you do too much of that, since the entire disc gets it every time.
i usually defrag once a year or so, and only my data partitions.

When I ran 98se, two things helped keep it running clean and fast. One was to go to the start up area and unselect programs that are non essential and like to run in the background. The second was to try a free ware which I upgraded to fully registered and still use on XP. It's called Registry Healer by KSL software. Does a good job of eliminating stray registry items that typically come from installing and uninstalling programs. Here's a link if you're interested.

I use regcleaner on my 2000 and 98se pc's (5 in total) has always worked nice. Do all those options in Registry Healer mentioned on that page work properly.
there are a few that regcleaner isnt capable of. Off course it has to be a thrustworthy prog if i going to let it work in something vital as the registry .
Btw in xp and 2000 you can also shutdown a lot of unnecesary things running i memory (infrared, webserver, ....) you can set these on or off in administrative tools.
