Digital Photography 101

This series is designed for those who are new to digital photography and is divided into three sets.

In the beginning portion of the course materials (1 thru 5), you will learn:

  • How to choose the right digital camera (if you don’t have one)
  • The differences between consumer, prosumer and professional models of digital cameras
  • The common terms used in digital photography such as megapixel and SLR (and what they mean)
  • The differences between physical card formats (SD, xD and so on)
  • Where to purchase digital cameras and things to watch for (return policies, etc.)

In the second section of the course materials (6 thru 10), you will learn:

  • The differences between indoor and outdoor photography environments (and how to prepare to shoot photos in either)
  • The definition of what “flat light” means
  • The definition of a frame as it pertains to photography
  • The “nanny modes” of digital cameras and how to compensate for them

In the third section of the course materials (11 thru 14), you will learn:

  • How to take panorama-style (super-wide, a.k.a. “stitched”) photos – even with basic digital cameras
  • The definition of what ISO is and how it works with digital cameras
  • The definition of shutter speed and f-stop and what it can/cannot do for you
  • Advanced shooting techniques such as focus “tricks”

In the fourth section of the course materials (15 thru 17), you will learn:

  • What software is available right now that’s free to use to edit your photos
  • How to use this software to edit your photos
  • How to publish your photos to the internet

The ultimate goal of this course is to allow you to take great photos as quickly as possible so you can start filling up your digital camera with some great stuff. After that, you will be able to edit your photos easily and publish them to the web in record time.
