The System Restore service doesn’t necessarily have to take up 12% of your hard-disk: In fact that figure can be set anywhere between 1 and 12 per-cent. Although, as I’ve highlighted in an article I wrote for PC Mech in 2008, System Restore shouldn’t be relied on rather than a backup, it does come in useful for making a registry backup, etc.

Personally I usually have it set to use 5% of my hard-drive’s space – Which is commonly more than enough for the last couple of restore points.

I certainly have had the occasion in the past to resort to System Restore. My desktop settings (appearance, icons etc.) and many folders just disappeared for no apparent reason, and without System Restore I would have been in trouble. I definitely would NOT recommend to disable this service even if you would have to sacrifice 20% of your hard drive (which is probably half empty anyway).

    Thanks Rich,

Keep up the great value. The best 65.00 I have spent this year.

Is there someway to save a restore point to a CD?
Also when the computer starts I get a screen that shows my harddrives and everything. How can I access that screen from windows?
