Resources For Buying Pre-Built Linux Computers

The only major computer maker who offers Linux as the provided operating system is Dell, specifically with Ubuntu. You can see Dell’s offerings at www.dell.com/ubuntu.

Are there other choices? Yes, however they’re all smaller computer makers. But just because they’re smaller doesn’t mean the computers aren’t built just as well.

Also bear in mind that most of these makers do both PCs and laptops, including some which are professionally "refitted" (such as a Lenovo ThinkPad) with Linux with provided support, and that’s important.

Here are a few resources that offer computers pre-built with the Debian GNU/Linux operating system. Debian, if you weren’t aware, is what Ubuntu uses. In addition, these companies should also be able to accommodate you with whatever Linux you want just in case Debian or Ubuntu is not to your liking.

I checked out all of these Linux makers back when I was looking for a new linux laptop. All were more expensive than the windows machines. So, I went to Dell and ordered a laptop (the XPS M1530) without an operating system. Then when I got the machine I loaded my own flavor of Linux and am supremely happy with the way the machine works.

And yes, the XPS is an expensive Dell, but it had all the bells and whistles I wanted and needed as a tech, but I knew would work well with Linux OS.

Others may find exactly what they want at this small companies, I just felt for me it wasn´t a fit.

It´s great to keep people updated on places that really do work with Linux on a full time basis, thanks for the article.

Right now (June/July 2009) is a good time to buy a new Dell Linux laptop. The Inspiron 15n with Ubuntu is $299 – and that has a 15-inch screen! Comes with a 160GB HDD and several other goodies. See it at http://www.dell.com/ubuntu and click the ‘shop for Ubuntu’ button.
