Securely Erasing A Hard Drive With KillDisk

If you have a computer or just a plain hard drive to sell, you should wipe it securely before selling it. One utility that has a free version which does a very good job of this is KillDisk. Contrary to the title, it doesn’t destroy hard drives. :-) It securely erases them. It works via floppy disk, CD or bootable USB. See below for details on how it works.

Have you tried ParetoLogic Privacy, seems to work pretty good, even has a government wipe.

I am experimenting now to see if available software can recover any files.

Haven’t tried that one. But DBAN at http://www.dban.org is a freebie that does have DoD-7 wipes available.

Dban is probably the best tool for erasing hdd’s out there.

When you mentioned about a hard drive acting up, I have Spinrite version 6. I’ve used this for hard drive maintenance. Works well and takes a long time also.
