It’s my opinion that CCleaner is the best registry clean-up tool for Windows that has ever existed. Yes, I know that’s a very bold statement, but I am very sincere about that. If you want the best (and free) registry cleaner for Windows, use CCleaner.
Small note before continuing: If you haven’t installed CCleaner before, be sure to go through the installation process slowly because otherwise the installer will add in the Yahoo! Toolbar in your browser. That’s how CCleaner is able to offer their software for free. Fortunately there’s no requirement to install the toolbar and all it takes is un-checking one box during installation.
My only complaint about CCleaner is that it does its job too well if you can believe it. What I mean by that is that it will sometimes "clean" preferences and data you don’t want deleted. Don’t worry, it doesn’t delete data that’s terribly valuable. All it does is cause a minor inconvenience. This inconvenience can be avoided easily just by customizing how it cleans.
Internet Explorer
If you use the IE web browser, you most likely want to keep your cookies, history, recently typed web addresses and autocomplete form history.
When you launch CCleaner, you’ll see this on the first screen. Simply un-check what you want to keep before running the cleaner, like this:
Other browsers like Firefox and Opera
In the screenshot above, note the two tabs Windows and Applications. Because IE is a native part of Windows, this is why it is listed under the Windows tab. Other browsers like Firefox and Opera are listed under the Applications tab.
On click of the Applications tab, the alternative web browsers you have installed are listed first. Simply un-check what you don’t want deleted before running the cleaner, like this:
Will CCleaner remember these settings?
Yes. You only have to set these options one time, and CCleaner will remember them the next time you run it.
