Creating a chart (such as a bar or pie chart) is easy in OpenOffice, however there is no straightforward way to export a chart as an image.
There is however a workaround that will allow you to do it using the companion program in the OpenOffice Suite, Draw.
First, create your chart data in Calc:

Next, hit the chart button in the toolbar area:

Next, adjust the chart type to suit. For this example I changed it to a pie chart:

This is the result:

Next, click File, New, then Drawing, like this:

OpenOffice Draw will launch. Leave it open and go back to Calc.
Click outside the chart, then inside so green boxes surround it, then right click and copy, like this:

Go to OpenOffice Draw, then click Edit and Paste, like this:

The chart will then be inside Draw as an image:

While still in Draw, click File then Export and choose the file type as JPEG, like this:

Name the file what you want it to be, choose the location and save.
The chart is then saved as an image, suitable for image sharing on the web.
