Above are some basic tips for how to properly archive scanned documents and photos using your existing hardware.
It is recommended that you always save at a minimum 600dpi using the file format TIFF so images can be viewed and read easily by OCR (optical character recognition) software properly.
Even the cheapest new scanner made today (which is about $60) has at least a maximum scan resolution of 1200dpi, so 600dpi is never a problem to achieve.
