So you got a brand spanking new processor? Good for you. Spent most of your hard earned cash on a new toy. What do you do now? One thing you can do, is to keep your investment COOL! Here is an article in a new series here at PCMech that we hope to keep going!
This demonstration was completed on an ATHLON (classic) 750 and ABIT KA7 motherboard.
This “Golden Orb” was purchased online from Directron. Price $17.99+tax/shipping
For those of us who try to keep our investments sound and working correctly, follow along as I demonstrate the installation of the Golden Orb. The Golden Orb is a cooling device, basically a fancy heatsink/fan combo that looks cool also. It can help keep your hard pumping processor at tolerable temperatures. Even when you are fragging away online playing UT or Quake3Arena.
Here is a top view of the “Orb”. As you can see it has alot of a horizontal heatsink that fits flush with your processor AND a heatsink around the cooling fan. Pretty “cool” idea if you ask me.
Here is a side view of the “unit”. Man, that’s alot of heatsink, and not some cheap junk either, this thing is built like a tank. Don’t let the size fool you, it’s about 5″ wide, but it’s VERY light!
Here is the “Orb” above my ATHLON 750. That gray stuff on the processor is leftover heatsink compound from my old “stock” heatsink. The old heatsink took a little “maneuvering” to get it off, so BE CAREFUL! The heatsink compound comes off very easy.
