Looking for an apartment or new house can be a real pain. After all, this is the place you have to live, so it really needs to be the perfect apartment. Thankfully, gone are the days where you had to look apartments up in the newspaper and then actually go to the apartment to see what it looks like.
These days, you can simply pull out your phone, fire up an app, and find all the apartments that fit your needs. Here are some of the best apartment/house search apps out there.
What better place to find an apartment than Apartments.com? Apartments.com has both a great website and a great app, both offering easy to use interfaces and a range of search parameters. Apartments.com is predominantly aimed at those looking for an apartments, however it also offers options for houses and condos. You can choose the range of rent you want to pay, how many rooms you want, whether you need a pet friendly place, and so on. It’s important to note that Apartments.com mostly has larger apartment complexes — don’t expect to find too many smaller apartment complexes or single apartments owned by individual people. One of my personal favorite features in the app is the ability to virtually walk through many of the apartments.
Sure, this one isn’t as pretty as Apartments.com, but it’s perfect for those looking for smaller complexes on smaller budgets. The app works in thousands of cities around the U.S. One of the great things about PadMapper is that it pulls search results from a range of different places, including ForRent, HomeSuite, and even Airbnb if you want. You can also include or exclude sublets, shared, apartments, and so on, as well as the usual price ranges and sizes.
HotPads is a little more difficult to navigate than some of the other services on this list, but the tradeoff is that it offers more features and is a little more detailed. The service has also been update recently to offer a better user interface, which definitely seems easier than its previous interface. It’s also important to note that it’s aimed largely at people who are looking for long term apartments rather than those looking for a short-term option, but there is a sublet filter too. One of the great things about the app is that it offer large, high-definition images, making it easier to get a good look at your potentially new apartment. Perhaps one of the drawbacks of the service is that it doesn’t really offer any information about local real estate agents.
As far as the number of apartments available on a service goes, MyNewPlace is pretty big. The service claims to have as many as 6 million apartments and rental homes around the U.S., so you should be able to find plenty of options in most major cities in the country. One of the coolest features in MyNewPlace is the attention to floor plans — which can be helpful for many on the hunt for a new place. Not only does it have standard 2D apartments, but for many apartment complexes it also offers 3D floor plans too. Another cool feature is that you can set apartments for in-person apartment walkthroughs straight from the app, if you sign up for an account. Last but not least, within the app you can take photos and notes so you can remember your train of thought later on.
This one is one of the better known services, and while it doesn’t have as many filters as, say, PadMapper, it does have a smooth and easy to use interface. Trulia is also a better service for those looking to buy rather than rent, and when you choose to buy or rent it normally comes up with a pretty good number of listings, depending on where you’re located. Another great feature in Trulia is the ability to show different “layers,” which show hotspots, schools, and other things nearby, so you can make sure you’re moving into the type of neighborhood that you want.
There are a ton of apartment search apps out there — as you can see they’re all slightly different. Hoping to virtually walk-through apartments to get a better idea of the place? Apartments.com might be for you. Looking for smaller complexes at cheaper prices? Maybe PadMapper is best. In any case, there should be something for everyone!
