Think you might need a clean install of Windows 10? It could be for a number of reasons — to get rid of bloatware that came with a new machine or to even try and get rid of some sluggishness. Thankfully, Microsoft offers a tool to help you out without losing too many of your personal files.

Starting with a clean slate again

First thing’s first, we’ll need to download the tool from Microsoft. You can head to the page directly here. From there, you’ll need to scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Download tool now.”

Once you have it downloaded, run the file and install it. Once you have, we’ll be able to start the process of getting you a fresh start on Windows 10.

After opening the program for the first time, you’ll be asked to accept some terms and conditions. You’ll need to click “Accept” to move onto the crux of the application.

Once you’ve done that and gotten to the second screen, you’ll be given a choice: to install a completely fresh version of Windows 10 or to install a fresh version of Windows 10 with your personal files. The former will give you a completely clean slate, while the latter will give you a clean version, but with many of your personal files still on it. Really, it’ll just get rid of the junk, and nothing else.

So, choose an option, then press start. Now, this is the point where you’re going to want to kick back and relax, as this is a long process. It does everything automatically without any user input needed, but it just takes a good chunk of time.

Once it’s finished, you’re taken to the sign-in screen where you can log-in just like you normally would. Once you sign-in, you’ll notice that all of the bloatware on the PC is gone, along with a bunch of other applications. It gives you a fresh start, that has, hopefully, freed up any sluggishness, and, of course, gotten rid of the annoying bloatware.
